Disturbing The Peace

Synopsis

This story is about Makoto Naegi and Kyoko Kirigiri's investigations into Hope's Peak Academy. It is a short oneshot. We will be ignoring Danganronpa 3 anime canon because I dislike it immensely and feel it is incoherent with Danganonpa as a whole. There may be hints of Naegiri because I literally cannot help myself. Trigger warnings include: Mentions of past violence, apocalyptic scenarios.

Makoto Naegi and Kyoko Kirigiri were still shaken by what they'd heard from Class 77-B on Jabberwock Island. Admittedly, Makoto had been demoted and Kyoko had taken a pay cut due to their disobedience of the Future Foundation's directives about Ultimate Despair, but the two of them felt it was for the best. After all, it was always better to redeem and help others rather than to leave them for dead. Makoto was a very firm believer in this principle, as he had tried and failed to help Junko. Even if she had done terrible things and pretty much singlehandedly ended the world, she was still a human being. Kyoko was less forgiving, but that didn't mean she wanted her dead. It truly was a terrible situation with true victory forever elusive.

Later that day, the pair were called to the chairman's office. Kazuo Tengan sat at his desk, massaging his temples. He seemed quite irritated by something. He took notice of them and gestured for them to sit. As they took their places on the chairs in front of them, he began to explain why he had summoned them. "I have many questions as to what else happened at Hope's Peak Academy during those fateful years. I am thankful for your report based on the testimonies of the Remnants of Despair, but plenty of things remain unclear. They only knew so much about Hope's Peak's leadership's decisions, after all. I have called you here today to request that you and the other survivors of Class 78 reopen the investigation to fully clarify the events leading up to the Tragedy of Hope's Peak Academy and The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History. Asahina-san, Togami-san and Hagakure-san will be assisting both of you. You have no time limit for this investigation, but I expect regular reports at least every month, until you have finished. Upon completion, you will both be able to resume your previous positions and salaries without issue."

Makoto's mouth gaped open like a fish. Kyoko took a look at him and nodded at Chairman Tengan. "We understand. We will investigate," she said. "Good. Now please prepare for your expedition. I have much to do, and very little time, so I am afraid you will have to leave." Kyoko took one look at the empty coffee cups dotting the office and another look at the chairman's weighty eyebags, and she and Makoto were on their way.
